150 Years Later-Still Fightin'

"This is a white man's government; that white men are able to defend and protect it, and that to enlist a negro soldier would be to drive every white man out of the service,"-Ohio Governor David Tod responding to a request to allow Black men to join the Union Army to fight against the Confederacy.

"The employment of negro soldiers is...a disgrace to the Government that employs them--a reproach to our cause--calculated to bring upon us the shame of the whole world, and to cause the South to fight as one man against us."-A Cincinnati politician's statement printed in the Cincinnati Enquirer, 1862.

Today marks the anniversary of the shots fired at Fort Sumter South Carolina, to start the Civil War. Southern states have been celebrating since the first of the year, presenting and spinning a squeaky clean image of the turmoil that tore apart the new nation of America. The south argues to this day that states rights were the reason behind the Civil War, while refusing to admit that the only states right in question was the right to own another human being as property.

Meanwhile, northern states such as Ohio, where slavery was outlawed from the beginning, have been content to stand behind an equally squeaky clean presentation of what took place back then...a “south, bad-north, good!” scenario, when the truth is out there and a bit more complicated.

In 1803 Ohio's capital was in Chillicothe, not Columbus. In 1803 state lawmakers decided to outlaw slavery in the newly formed state. However the decision was a majority decision that rested on just one vote. That one vote may have outlawed slavery, but it didn't make Blacks free, especially in Cincinnati which sits on the banks of the Ohio River directly across from the slave holding state of Kentucky.

Blacks who made it across the Ohio river were constantly looking over their shoulder for the Kentucky slave catchers who operated in Cincinnati just like they operated in the Bluegrass state. Blacks had to post a bond just to stay in Cincinnati and another bond to work, if they could find a job in the first place.

It was a common occurrence to see free Blacks literally snatched off the downtown streets by slave catchers and returned to points south, never mind if they were runaways or not. Despite popular notions, many Blacks did not come to this country in chains. Many came as free men, at least or until they crossed paths with a slave tracker.

The Cincinnati Enquirer is still in existence operating today with the same sort of blind eye bigotry that it did back in the early days of Cincinnati, presenting white washed stories of heroic people who took part in the Civil War starting with the Black Brigade and Powhatan Beaty.

Beaty was born a slave in Virginia in 1837 and came to Cincinnati in 1849, although it is not clear if he was freed before or after he arrived here. In Cincinnati, he studied acting and was a free man when the war broke out. In 1862, Beaty joined the “Black Brigade,” a unit of African-Americans who built many of the defenses around Cincinnati when it was threatened by Confederate forces.”- Cincinnati Enquirer, 4/2011.

Or William M. Dickson:

"A Cincinnati lawyer, Dickson organized and commanded the “Black Brigade,’one of the early all-African-American units. Dickson’s Black Brigade didn’t fight, but it built all the breastworks and defenses around Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Dickson’s wife was a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln”.- Cincinnati Enquirer, 4/2011.

The truth of the matter is that the Black Brigade, like everything else about Black life back then was not voluntary for Black men. In September of 1862, days after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Powhatan Beaty and other Black men were rounded up and jailed until they were set free to labor for the Union Army. This was how the Black Brigade was formed, no organization needed from Mr. William M. Dickson.

These men were taken away from their families and were never compensated for their work, barely remembered in historical reference. Other Black men left the state to join legitimate regiments such as the 54th out of Massachusetts. Beaty distinguished himself when he was finally allowed to fight and a was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery. He is buried at Union Baptist Cemetery in Price Hill.

Ohio, in fact had a law on the books banning Blacks from joining the Ohio Militia in any form, a law repeatedly upheld by the aforementioned Governor Tod until he was forced into action by the federal government.

This white washing of history does no one any good. All people suffer when the truth is not told. The sanitized version of the Civil War as presented by nearly everyone north or south perpetuates deeply buried racism and bigotry that underlies every institution in the United States of America. When Blacks talk about institutional or ingrained racism, this is what we mean. Institutional and ingrained racism is denied by whites today as a figment of a Black mindset that simply won't die.

Ingrained racism is mirrored in insidious, bigoted and cowardly attacks of a bad makeup wearing, on paper, billionaire real estate developer looking for publicity for his television show.

Ingrained racism and bigotry keeps alive the birther movement long after the truth is known.

Ingrained racism against Blacks gives birth to the tea party movement today while harkening backward in history to a movement called the copperhead movement. Today's tea party regularly uses slogans coined by copperheads back in the day.

Institutional and ingrained racism allows deniers of all colors to rewrite history into a fairytale of happy Negroes singing, dancing and smiling on the plantation, safely snatched from the horrors of their African origins and families.....”America, white people, good-Africa, black people, bad!”

Institutional racism allows the news media to give air time to any bigot stupid enough to utter or write out the word “nigger” in an email addressed to people of similar mind set, while ignoring the lack of diversity within their own ranks.

Blacks suffer, victimized outright by white denial and flight, but also from refusing to recognize our own complicity in our degradation.

Blacks must first seek the truth behind the history presented. Blacks must also learn the difference between “integration” and “assimilation.” We are being assimilated and erased...not a good thing.

Salvation lies not in the Black church...another product foisted upon Blacks by whites during slavery...but in education and the taking of responsibility for our own communities and behavior. 72% out of wedlock birth rate is not responsible, nor are the daily killings of young Black men by other young Black men..it is slow and painful community wide suicide.

In 2011, on the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Sumter, Black people rather than celebrating the beginnings of our official fight for freedom are embroiled in a fight for existence.

And the fight for civil rights, well it is basically passe...destined to become a footnote in the history of a now, admittedly mixed race America.

Friday Rap

The Cincinnati Enquirer Sucks-My editorial about the Local Newspaper

With all due respect and apology to the NYTimes, here are two editorials about health care reform. Even when I disagree, the Op Ed board in the big apple presents its reasoning and arguments in a classy, professional and elegant way. You can read it here.

The second piece is from my hometown paper, The Cincinnati Enquirer. I stopped reading this rag a long time ago because it's blatant right wing lean has offended me for much of my newspaper reading life, which began sometime around my third birthday, and I am now 59.

This paper has never risen to more than fourth grade reading and writing level. So I outgrew it a long time ago. I read daily, 7 newspapers. I skim 5 or 6 others along with a host of news gathering websites. All in all, I spend about 3 hours of my day reading news and Op-ed pieces worldwide. But since I'm no longer a working reporter in Cincinnati, the Enquirer is not one of them.

Fact is, I am only reacting to this pseudo-op ed because a person posted it on my Facebook page, venting about the bigotry contained in the piece. His anger peaked my curiosity. So I looked. You can read it here.

The paper has always been biased against Blacks. It has always favored the GOP view, no matter what. It hasn't changed in my lifetime except to get more blatant about displaying its bias. However, it used to at least make an attempt at objectivity. It used to at least try to look at the facts as presented by both sides. It used to be less obvious about the racism that it harbors for 40% of the local population.

Now, it is simply an embarrassment. No tact, no objectivity, no class, no professionalism of any kind.

No Black people in editorial. No local Black journalists. No other perspectives allowed except Price Hill and Indian Hill, with nothing in between.

Bellicose Old Men

This is why senile old men should be made to retire from Congress. Two of the worst-John McCain and Joe Liebermann have introduced a bill called the "Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010"

This act, god forbid that it ever make it into law, allows the government to detain, arrest and torture, hold indefinitely without counsel and trial, until it sees fit to let them go or kill them, possibly, anybody who comes in contact with “terrorism.”

This is not about a conviction....this is about a suspicion...probable cause not mandatory....If this bill becomes law, then someone...anyone can turn you in...or any cop can see you do something and not like it...or they might not like your looks because they profiled you for some reason...whatever...this measure would allow them to lock you up and throw away the key.....no due process....the infraction...can happen anywhere in the world...including on American soil...

The hold is called “detention without trial of unprivileged enemy belligerents.” Enemy belligerents is now the new “it” word replacing “enemy combatants” in government-speak.

Fess Parker...RIP

Davey Crockett has gone on the the big Alamo in the sky.

Parker was the first actor that I followed religiously when I was a kid. He is the first person I really remember on TV. There was one episode of Davey Crockett that I still think about...

It was about a grizzly bear that killed people by beating and chewing them to death....never left any paw marks because the claws had been burned off in a forest fire....The wild bear would freak out and kill anyone unlucky enough to be in the forest sitting around a camp fire... and for a long time in the story.....no one knew the killer was a bear...

Scared me to death...it was a two parter..and I had nightmares for days....I was five or six at the time..

Yep, this storyline ranks just below the Psycho shower scene, for messing with my mind...Psycho came out when I was 10 and I wasn't allowed to go see it until I was 17 or 18 years old...had no idea what it was until I finally saw it...

Watched Parker in Daniel Boone, too, with Ed Ames....loved it...RIP Fess..

Cincinnati City Council Endorsements

UPDATE.....Even after writing a post, I continue to look at the issue at hand, continue to learn and to tweak my knowledge, so to speak....Sometimes....my first judgment and pronouncement is wrong....and I will admit that....

I was wrong for saying that I will vote for Kevin Flynn....I will not....Even though he is endorsed by the Charter Party....His endorsement by Right to Life made me look closer......He's just not my kind of guy...because he chooses to relegate me and other women to second class citizenship....We are not equal in the eyes of Mr Flynn when it comes to making decisions that impact our lives as human beings....

Since he won't recognize female cognitive abilities....He cannot represent me in government or anything else for that matter......

So I'm sorry......My bad.....I ain't votin' him...not never.....not no how.....

My new revised list is....

Qualls...Greg Harris.....Young....Quinlivan.....Fischer.....Bortz

Berding?.....Watson.....Thomas...

************************************************************************************
The Cincinnati Enquirer has issued its endorsements for City Council and many of them are no surprise. You can read about them here.

Jeff Berding
Roxanne Qualls
Chris Bortz
Leslie Ghiz
Nickolas Hollan
Cecil Thomas
Kevin Flynn
Amy Murray
Charles Winburn

Having an endorsement from the Cincinnati Enquirer is enough to usually make me NOT want to vote for any of them, but I have to admit that this perennially right leaning poor excuse for a newspaper gets it right sometimes...

Like with Roxanne Qualls, Cecil Thomas and Kevin Flynn....

I think they were correct in not endorsing Laketa Cole and Chris Monzel...I would sideline Leslie Ghiz for the same reason as I sideline Laketa Cole...

Both show tremendous immaturity and a lack of common sense...Ghiz....Little more than a Midwestern version of Sarah Palin..exhibits little class...fewer smarts.....twittering during Council or Committee sessions is the kind of behavior that I expect from my 13 year old niece..not my city government representatives.....

Cole needs to grow up...plain and simple....taking the Black vote for granted is the height of arrogance....and the mark of a bad politician...

Charlie Winburn is anachronistic at best....On his best days...he can't think or function past the 19th century......He's the monkey wrench who would be thrown into the machinery that is slowly pulling Cincinnati kicking and screaming into the 21st century...bringing it to a grinding halt...

Chris Monzel is a white Charlie Winburn....but not as smart...

I want to see this city move forward so to the mix of Qualls, Thomas and Flynn....I would add

Wendell Young
Laurie Quinlivan
Greg Fischer
Chris Bortz
Jeff Berding
Bernadette Watson

Let me say this about Berding....I haven't liked him since he spearheaded the Stadium vote several years ago...But I respect him for sticking to his guns...... I think dissent is sometimes a good thing...I disagreed with the Democratic Party pulling his endorsement....I would rather not see him on Council and I honestly don't know if I'm gonna vote for him...but given the choices...he may wind up holding onto his seat...

Also messing up progress is Issue 9...It needs to be voted down.... COAST and their boy Chris Smitherman are insidious...and very bad for Cincinnati...Smitherman is bad for the Black Community....

Issue 9 is wrong for the City...period...

Ohio Issue 3....the casino issue is an issue whose time is now....we need the Casinos..

Mayor Mark Mallory needs to be re elected.

Regardless of who you choose....the important thing is to vote in November

Cincinnati News

If it happens today....it's news to us

I stopped reading the Cincinnati Enquirer a long, long time ago. To put it bluntly, it has been an insult to my intelligence since I graduated the third grade....

It's ongoing racist, republican slant has always driven me up a wall...and I'm talking 50 plus years...since my people taught me to read...with comic books and the newspaper by the time I was three...The newspaper sections were handed around the kitchen table...each of us reading something..

But today...

Occasionally a story posted somewhere else may get my attention, however going to the Enquirer for more detail rather than the tease I'd just read, is a big waste of time.

Used to be you could get some news from the Post Time Star...but that was before it combined forces with the Enquirer and became a subsidiary before going out of business altogether..

The most wonderful thing about the internet is being able to read real newspapers from across the country and the world.....which I do daily with my breakfast...

I know they are going away, slowly, but it's good while it lasts...

Anyway...

I've been very upset with what passes as news on Cincinnati TV as well and after today, I'm turning it off too...

With the exception of Deb Dixon's work at Channel 12 and Hagit's work on the I team at Channel 9..there is no real news on Cincinnati TV.....Channel 5...well, I do like Andrew Setters....known him since he was a cub reporter....I don't get up early enough to watch Sheila Gray on 19 anymore..

This breaking news thing...which is little more then what is coming across the scanner...that's not news gathering...folks..

What set this rant off today is that the station that happens to be on my television...

leads with the fact that Simon Leis has bullied the Hamilton County Commissioners into allowing him to buy a new toy...in this case a boat..

When the real story should be....Why is this man still in office? Yeah, I know he is elected....He stopped being a sheriff a long time ago...

Given his age...he is probably double dipping just like all those people he refuses to let go under his command, because he doesn't want to train anyone new....

He said that....

Can you imagine a county or city official in any other state in the world, telling the administrators on camera, he's not going to make budget cuts because he doesn't want to pass the torch to younger and lesser paid people..

I paraphrased his words..that's not an exact quote...but you can go back and find it..

The Commisioners took it as usual..should have just stood up dropped their pants and bent over..no vaseline needed..

And Cincinnati news dutifully and quietly reported it...no pushback...no investigations....dropped the story.....like it never happened...

I know the reason is that the assignment editors and news directors are afraid that the newsmakers will stop talking to them..

News Flash Guys....They don't talk to you now!

Another story that should be screaming from the headlines...

A 20-million dollar unexpected shortfall in city money...due to an error...cuts have to come...okay...how many days off are city council and city administrators going to take unpaid...along with their hourly employees...

And if the answer is none....Why not?

It's the same as CEOs who screw up their companies and still want big bonuses...

The city is in trouble....the hourly workers didn't screw up....administrators did though..
Why should they still be paid in a business as usual fashion while hourly workers are forced to take unpaid days off to compensate for the shortfall

Another one...anyone figure out why it's easier to do business in Northern Kentucky then in Cincinnati...

Might make a nice investigative piece....

How about the real reasons why Black and other minority contractors can't get work on the so called big building projects in Cincinnati......

Or has anyone looked into the squeeze that a certain local health insurance agency puts on local doctors forcing them to cut services ..

Some doctors are charging an extra yearly service fee to patients, in addition to co pays..been going on for a while...

Why not look at the health plans being offered....rather than bitch about the changes...The changes may be legal...but are they fair....or do they allow the insurance giant to gain larger profits off the backs of the people...

Or why is everyone congratulating the new incoming head of Procter and Gamble, when this guy says he is going to move jobs into Asia and the Middle East....

Question.........are those Cincinnati jobs that are being outsourced? Even if the answer is No..there undoubtedly will be some "shrinkage" as in fewer people hired here and job consolidaion...

Questions...Questions...Questions.....And nobody is asking....hmmmmmmmmm

Leis, Streicher Fearmongering Tactics

Say crime will go up in Cincinnati in 2009

You knew it was coming. As soon as voters refused to allocate new tax monies for a bigger jail, that Simon Leis and his boys would start the fearmongering about increased crime on the streets of Cincinnati. And of course, the only "newspaper" in town would back them up. You can read the it here.

Now, the FBI and the Ohio Department of Safety show that crime is down for the past several years. You can check out the stats here.

In fact, the only increase that I can find is in burglaries. All other crimes have been dropping since 2000. Yet, Sheriff Leis, Police Chief, Tom Streicher and Common Pleas Judge Nick Nadel are telling us to brace for an onslaught of criminal violence in coming years, because criminals are being released back onto the streets. Never mind that most of the time the arrests made by Leis and company are for misdemeanor drugs, traffic violations or prostitution in Over the Rhine. And those not fueled by drugs, are fueled by alcohol. Officials admit that those being released are nonviolent offenders. Some of the alleged bad guys with repeat raps are being turned loose with ankle monitors and placed on house arrest.

Since they can no longer lock people up for useless reasons, maybe now is the time to explore other means of fighting crime. Maybe it’s time to stop assuming that all black guys and inner city youth are potential criminals who need to be constantly watched, harassed and locked up when they jay walk or spit on a sidewalk. Just from watching the news you can tell that most of these high speed chases are guys running from a bunch of misdemeanor warrants, rather than a violent or felony crime, in the first place. Somebody has more than two warrants on anything, boot their cars, impound their cars, til they show up in court or leave Ohio. Take their cars and auction them off to make money for the county.

How about some programs designed to get guns off the streets and out of the neighborhoods. How about other means like treatment for alcohol and drug abusers. Or if you want to save some money, take the cops out of the cruisers, park the cars and walk the neighborhoods, or put more bikes on the street, or maybe scooters. Cops walking a regular beat will clear the streets, very quickly. The guys won’t hang on the corners if the cops are hanging there with them, or regularly walking by. How about getting rid of those "white hat" uniforms, in favor of something a little more street, that doesn't shout "cop" at first sighting, or from ten blocks away.

Do more enforcement in the suburbs. I’ve said this before, those who buy drugs from inner city kids don’t live in the neighborhood. If you’re going to throw the book at somebody, how about throwing it at the kid in his parent’s range rover, who drove into Avondale from West Chester to score some weed. Or how about prostitution. Leave the girls and boys who peddle their behinds, selling BJs for 10- bucks, alone. Get them into treatment. Take out the johns who are buying. They don’t live in Over the Rhine either. Make a big deal out of their arrests. Give the Enquirer something to do. Let it print the mugshots of the busted johns on the front page.

Better yet, let's legalize prostitution and tax the hell out it.

How about giving those nonviolent, albeit undisciplined youth a choice, jail or the army, with a minimum of three years. The army needs people and last year it lowered requirements to accept felons. Still won’t take gays, but it will take a lawbreaker. So accommodate America, send those who want to act up in society or not go to school, to the armed forces. If it’s a first offense, they get to choose. If they get busted again, then they go to Afghanistan, period. That gets them off the streets. No new jail needed.

Scare tactics like Leis announcing that deputies are being pulled from metal detector duty at the courthouse are ludicrous. Building more jails has never worked. Police officials and Judges unwilling to evolve past lock em up and throw away the key, need to retire effective immediately.

Taming Your Inner Carnivore

Women should pay attention to two extensive scientific studies released this week. The studies deal with the links between eating red meat and how effective vitamins are as a preventative for heart disease in women.

You can read the full report on red meat and breast cancer in the Archives of Internal Medicine magazine. In a nutshell the report says the more red meat you eat, the greater your risk for breast cancer.

“More” is defined as 1 and ½ servings per day which makes women twice as likely to develop hormone related breast cancer, as those women who ate fewer than three portions of red meat per week.

The second report is the longest running study of how, or if, vitamin supplements help prevent heart disease in women. This study was conducted by doctors from Harvard who concluded that the supplements, don’t help much at all. Although there were some hints that vitamin C may do a little something for high risk women. That conclusion, say doctors, needs more study.

The vitamin study has been going on for a decade and more than 8000 women were randomly given vitamin C, E and beta carotene. Another 5000 women were given folic acid and vitamin B for seven years.

The doctors concluded there was “minimal evidence” of cardiovascular benefit. This study continues.

In the meat study, 90,000 women between the ages of 26 and 46, were looked at, and questioned over a 20 year period. They were divided into five groups based on how much meat they ate on a regular basis.

Meat consumption was linked to breast cancers caused by the hormones estrogen and progesterone, but not to non hormonal cancers.

The women who ate the most meat were also likely to be smokers and overweight. Even taking these factors into account, doctors say they were able to document the red meat cancer connection.

The bottom line to all this.....cut down on red meat, stop smoking and exercise. We keep hearing that.

Are we listening?

Enquirer, Blackwell joined at the hip

If there was any doubt in anyone’s mind that the Cincinnati Enquirer was nothing more than a Republican Party Newsletter, that doubt was erased this morning with its endorsement of Ken Blackwell for Governor of Ohio.

The Enquirer admitted that Blackwell is a slease ball...that he has no integrity...that the more honorable candidate is Ted Strickland...yet they endorse Blackwell over Strickland.

Every other newspaper is this state has endorsed Strickland. One newspaper actually endorsed Blackwell and took it back because of his underhanded, vile and vicious tactics used against his opponent. The entire nation has been appalled by what has been coming out of Blackwell's mouth. Even Dubya called him a "nut."

But the mighty Enquirer rails against injustice...it rails against the detractors of Cincinnati, saying the city has changed...it is not racist...it is a good place to live for all people, it says.

Then it turns around and endorses the status quo. Cincinnati has long been the considered the laughing stock of this nation. I guarantee you, that will not change with this endorsement.

So what is this? Does endorsing a black man make the Enquirer look like it’s doing the right thing? That it is looking past color to make a just and correct decision?

This is the same newspaper that just last week took poet Nikki Giovanni to task for calling Blackwell a “political whore.” They slammed her last week, and slammed Blackwell today. But then endorsed him one paragraph later. Go figure.

Tell me who’s the whore now?

I have lived in Cincinnati nearly all my life and it has always, always gone with the republican candidate, no matter what.

The Enquirer has never been a voice of the people. It has proven today that it never will be. The people have spoken.

But it is once again obvious that the Enquirer is not listening.
